Biographical data on Charles Brewster, 1866, 1880.

Photocopies of the cover and contents of Charles Brewster's Secretary of War Office file, documenting his 1866 and 1880 employment applications. The 1866 materials include a letter from Brewster, applying for a stenographer position, with recommendation letters from U. S. Senator Alexander Ramsey, U. S. Representative Ignatius Donnelly, and St. Paul attorney James Smith. The 1880 letter is from U. S. Representative Samuel S. Sawyer to Secretary of War Alexander Ramsey recommending Brewster, at that time living in Kansas City, for a position. Brewster, who held a commission in the army during the Civil War and served on the staffs of General George Armstong Custer and Major General John Gibbon, had been employed as a managing clerk in James' St. Paul law office for over four years prior to his Civil War service.
